Designate a Gift

We're asking you to decide how your donation dollars are spent! Below, you can designate a tax-deductible gift of necessary camp items (basketball, books & more) or sponsor a child's attendance of our Athletics & Academics Camps:

Our donation wish-list for the 2010 Athletics & Academics Island Camps:

Stimulate a child's mind with a book

The need: According to the Governtment of St. Vincent & the Grenadines (SVG), in 2002 33 percent of persons with a primary education could not demonstrate basic literacy competency. Six years later, a survey of sixth graders showed that 42 percent of students were reading below their level. KLF believes that the ability to read is essential to a child's future success, and wants to send a message through its camps (and NBA player-coach participants) that reading is "cool" and something that everyone should do.

Your generous gift will allow us to hold book fairs at each of the Camps, giving each attending child the opportunity to choose a book for themselves. According to Scholastic, giving the child the power to choose their own reading material helps them to develop a love of reading, rather than seeing it as a chore.

To encourage each child to read their book, every child who submits a book report on their received book will be entered into a drawing to win cool prizes.

Teach basketball and encourage a child

The need: KLF uses basketball as the hook to convene kids at their Athletics & Academics camps and then takes the opportunity to talk to them about staying healthy and striving for academic excellence. The camps will be unable to function without enough basketballs.

Your gift of a basketball will initially teach basketball skills and then serve as a reminder of our camp and the educational lessons also taught at our camps. The ball will be custom-printed with a public awareness message about staying in school, saying no to drugs/smoking, or being healthy. The balls will be given out to campers as a reward, not just for their athletic prowess, but also for how well they pay attention to the educational stations.

Our goal is to secure 250 balls in order to have one ball for every 4 children.

Feed a child or 10

The need: St. Vincent & the Grenadines is one of the poorer nations of the Caribbean. Their 1996 Poverty Assessment Report estimated that a third of the population lived below the poverty line, and 32.6% of the population were unable to cover their dietary requirements. The rising costs of living in the country makes hot nutritious meals a luxury to many households.

Your gift will provide hot nutritious meals for 10 children at our 2009 Athletics & Academics camps. The meal will consist of rice, chicken and a vegetable.

Contribute to fixing up a basketball court

The need: Hurricane Katrina was a disaster for the city of New Orleans. Five years later they are still recovering. Your donation will support our refurbishment project of a community playground and their basketball court.

T-shirts for 50 children

The need: In a developing country, clothes are an essential but often seen as a luxury, especially next to school uniforms. Our camp t-shirts are made specifically for use during the camps but then provide kids with a "play" shirt which they can wear for non-school activities.

Your gift will provide t-shirts for 50 children who attend the Athletics & Academics Camps in St. Vincent & the Grenadines. The t-shirt is a lasting reminder of the fun that the kids had at the camp and of the lessons they learned. We still see kids around the country wearing their t-shirts from the camps we held in 2007!

Sponsor a child to attend the Camps

The need: According to the St. Vincent and the Grenadines HIV/AIDS/STI National Strategic Plan 2004-2009, the 2001 census showed that over half of the population was under 30 years of age, with almost one-third of the population under 15 years. With such a young population and an estimated illiteracy rate of 10 percent, youth programs that encourage education are critical to the future of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Youth must be taught to recognize the value of the classroom and how to stay healthy.

Adonal Foyle’s Athletics & Academics Island Camps are free day camps held for the at-risk youth in the Caribbean. We are also bringing youths from St. Vincent & the Grenadines to the States. The Camps teach youth participants basketball skills, health awareness and the importance of education. KLF’s unique approach is to provide the opportunity for youths to spend a fun-filled day of holistic learning led by a true role model with whom the kids can relate with and aspire to emulate.

It is widely accepted that celebrities and professional athletes often have a greater influence on youth than parents and teachers, thus the camps capitalize on this concept by bringing in 4 to 5 NBA professional athletes to interact with the youth and share positive and constructive messages of encouragement as related to their education and health. KLF Founder & NBA player Adonal Foyle is the epitome of the concept of a healthy balance between academics and sports, and as a fellow Vincentian he acts as a tangible model of success for children in St. Vincent & the Grenadines to emulate.
