Kerosene Lamp Foundation Raises $10,000 at Gala to Benefit At-Risk Youth with Boost from NBA’s Dwight Howard

ORLANDO, FL., April 20, 2010 – Basketball veteran and inductee into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame, Adonal Foyle, hosted KLF's Gala Dinner & Caribbean Fête in downtown Orlando, raising more than $10,000 for his Kerosene Lamp Foundation (KLF). The event was a sold-out success with 126 attendees packing the Grand Bohemian Hotel ball room.

One of the features of the evening was a centerpiece competition, where local florists entered their most creative floral arrangements designed to fit the theme of a Caribbean Fête. Flowerama Florist beat out other entries with a pirate ship fashioned from tropical flowers (see a list of all participating florists below).

At the Caribbean-themed event, Dwight Howard - 2009 NBA Defensive Player of the Year and Orlando Magic Center – announced the launch of his Dwight Howard Fund with the mission to help at-risk youths around the world, beginning with Haiti. Howard has tapped KLF to manage the fund on his behalf and is calling on fans to join him in the cause. Donations for the fund for children in Haiti can be made at www.dwighthowardfund.org.

“My foundation has made great strides in helping at-risk youth since 2005,” said Foyle. “The funds raised through the generosity of the gala attendees will allow us to invest in the lives of some amazing kids in St. Vincent & the Grenadines through cultural exchange and mentorship.”

Gala proceeds will support “Adonal’s All-Star Student Athletes,” a group of promising young basketball players in St. Vincent & the Grenadines. These students will be encouraged to be stars on and off the court and provided with ongoing mentoring and academic tutoring, as well as the opportunity to travel to the United States, where they will play basketball and be exposed to American culture (from museums and theater to interacting with Orlando youths). Funds will also contribute to a playground and basketball court refurbishment project in one of the New Orleans neighborhoods ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.

“It means a lot to me to be able to give back,” said Foyle. “There were incredible opportunities provided to me that gave me a foundation for success in life. I feel it’s my personal responsibility to continue that legacy and support the youth in my home country as well as in the U.S.”
