In 2010, thanks to a grant from the SportsUnited, a program of the US Department of State, KLF reached over 300 at-risk youths in Trinidad & Tobago through 4 camps!

Camp Locations & Schedule (Trinidad & Tobago):

July 8: Maloney, Trinidad
July 9: Port of Spain, Trinidad
July 10: Point Fortin, Trinidad
July 11: Tobago

We targeted youths with the following characteristics:

Children aged 11-14 years of age
Children from poor families
Children who are interested in sports, but not the classroom
Children who are good in the classroom but not interested in sports
Children who are at-risk, meaning that they may not have the ideal family support and need some extra encouragement & support

Areas of Learning:

Basketball > dribbling, shooting, rebounding, passing
HIV/AIDS awareness
Sports psychology

Literacy Promotion:

KLF also gave a book to each participating child, through a book fair alongside each Camp.

We also left another 500 books for our local partners to distribute throughout the rural areas of Trinidad.

Training of Physical Education Teachers:

KLF hosted two training of trainers (ToT) sessions for basketball coaches and physical education teachers in Trinidad & Tobago. Tom Smith, the former Head Athletic Trainer for the Orlando Magic volunteered his time for this important component.
